Something you should probably know about me is that I LOVE donuts. You ever like something so much it sort of becomes “your thing?” Like, everyone in your life starts talking to you about it, centers their birthday and holiday gifts around it, or expect you to constantly bring something related to that thing with you wherever you go? Well let’s just say, donuts are so much my thing, even my boss runs to my office first thing whenever someone brings donuts to the office to make sure I know there are donuts on the premises.
Long story short, I. Love. Donuts. So I feel like I would be doing the world a disservice if I didn’t share some of the vast donut knowledge I’ve attained over the last few years with you all. I plan to expand my list to all of my favorite donut shops nationwide, but because there are so many amazing shops in Florida alone, I figured I would start here.
This list is not exhaustive and while I am going to let you know the nitty gritty as far as pros and cons of each, I definitely invite you to try each shop with an open mind. Imo any donut is better than no donut and everyone will have preferences (duh, Melissa, get to the point).
DG Doughnuts

When I think of donuts, I automatically think of DG. These “Damn Good” donuts have become the donuts I compare all other donuts to. While I typically prefer yeasted donuts, DG creates some of the most flavorful and satisfying cake donuts I’ve ever tasted. They change their flavors weekly which means there is always something new to try and there is always bound to be a flavor for everyone. They create such wildly unique combinations like orange creamsicle, blueberry cheesecake bizmark and smoked bourbon with salted caramel. However, they also blow the classics out of the water with there classic glazed, Boston cream, and sprinkled donuts. Pro tip: if you aren’t one to shy away from a challenge, order one of their massive apple fritters or the aptly named “Biggie Smalls.” You won’t be disappointed.
Something to consider before making your way to one of their locations is that you’ll be paying around $3 per donut. One of their donuts is about three times the size of your standard donut though, so in my opinion, the product is absolutely worth the price.
Donuts To Go

If you’re someone who prefers the classics, this hole in the wall donut shop is definitely one to check out! The staff here are always incredibly friendly and often times are even willing to whip up a fresh batch of donuts for you if you can’t find your flavor! The best donuts I’ve tried here have to be the Nutella filled yeasted donut (pictures above) and their apple fritter. They make their fritters crunchy with lots of glaze and apple pieces baked throughout.
Mojo Donuts

While Miami, FL has become a hot spot for gourmet donut shops, Mojo Donuts is probably the best all around location there. Their donuts are not only made with high quality, soft, raised yeasted dough, but are also filled to the brim with out of this world flavors. They offer options like the Abuelita (pictured above) which is a rice pudding filled donut topped with dulce de leche icing and the Deco Delight which is filled with a fruity cream center and topped with mounds of fresh fruits and chocolate. It’s no surprise that this shop has been featured nation wide on news stations and promoted by celebrities like J-Lo. If you’re in the Pembroke Pines or Miami area, this is a must try donut shop.
Voodoo Doughnuts

Many people know Voodoo Doughnuts as one of the OG donut shops in the US, but many people might not realize that Orlando, FL’s very own Universal Studios has opened a Voodoo Doughnuts location in the ever expanding City Walk! The store front is so much fun with a huge donut throne out front for an amazing photo opp along with a huge rotating donut display in the middle of the shop so that you can see all of the many donut options to choose from as you walk through the line. Speaking of the line, since the location is in City Walk, there will often be a line that extends all the way out the shop, so be ready to wait if you’re itching to try one of these donuts!
While I have had many delicious well baked donuts at Voodoo, I have unfortunately also been served a number of stale donuts as well. The shop is forced to produce large quantities of donuts at once due the the heavy traffic from it’s location, meaning every now and then you will be given a donut that might have been hanging out for a while on the shelf. If you do stop in, I recommend trying the Pride Bar (pictured above) which is a Bavarian cream filled donut topped with vanilla icing and lined with a rainbow of Fruit Loops cereal.
The Salty Donut

I hate to say this since as I mentioned before any donut is better than no donut, but The Salty Donut is probably ranked lowest for me in regards to donut options in Miami. After reading review after review of how amazing the donuts are, I was disappointed to learn that many of the donuts had sold out by the time we arrived at the shop. Also, the flavors we ordered were a bit underwhelming and the dough was a bit bread-like in texture. If wanting to check out these donuts, I recommend getting to the shop as early as possible to avoid long lines and sold out flavors. Perhaps we will need to head back to try these donuts again. If we do, I’ll be sure to provide an update on our experience!
Honeybee Doughnuts

Honeybee is a humble Miami donut shop with beautifully crafted donuts sold in both regular size and minis. They offer gluten free options such as their Signature Honeybee donut which offers a raised double chocolate donut topped with fresh whipped cream and local honey. If you have a major sweet tooth like me, you will lose your mind over their other flavors like the Oreo or Ferraro Roche donuts (pictured above). If you’re looking to get a new pic for your Insta or Facebook, these donuts will be the picture perfect option for your next photo shoot.
Donut King

The first time visiting Donut King the plan was to pick up one donut each, but ended up walking away with a half dozen, one of which needed its own box because it was just that massive. We couldn’t have decided on only two donuts because there were so many flavors to choose from. Not only do they have amazing flavors like Nutter Butter, Heath Bar and Devils Food cake, they also have what they call “fancy donuts” which must weigh about 5 pounds each. The donuts themselves are made with a light, airy dough, but be warned that with wild flavors also comes pretty high sugar content. These donuts are sweet! If you’re craving something to take the edge off that intense sweet tooth of yours, head over to Minneola or Winter Park for a donut the size of your head!
SoDOUGH Baking Co

SoDOUGH is a fairly new donut shop located right next door to Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. Their shop offers impeccably flavored gourmet donuts as well as delicious coffee and other unique dessert options like frosted biscuits. The cookie dough flavor (pictured above) is by far one of the most addicting flavored donuts I have ever tried. The frosting is made with brown sugar molasses, creating a rich flavor that is matched by a heaping scoop of house-made edible cookie dough. Their flavors are out of this world and deserve the highest of praise.
Jupiter Donuts

Jupiter donuts is a staple in the Palm Beach area. Locals flock to this shop as soon as they open every day and will have the donuts sold out before noon! Their donuts are well made but their apple fritter is something straight out of a dream. One of their best and most popular flavors is their French Toast donut (pictured above). The donut is exactly what you’d imagine, a fluffy yeasted ring with crunchy sugar topping and decorated with a dollop of sweet cream frosting.
Valkyrie Donuts

Any vegan foodies out there? Well, whether vegan or not, Valkyrie Donuts has a donut recipe that could rival any regular egg and dairy donut shop. Their donuts all begin with the same fluffy, square vegan base and are then are elevated by any flavor topping you can dream up. Flavors have ranged from caramelized banana to s’mores all the way to everyone’s fav PSL (pumpkin spice latte). If you’re feeling lucky, you may even try your turn at getting to the shop when they’re serving their Oreo Bombs, an Oreo donut topped with Oreo icing, sprinkled with Oreo crumb topping and stuffed with an Oreo inside! I think a carrot cake Oreo bomb should be in their future. What do you think
Five-O Donut Co

When I tell you I had an unhealthy obsession with the social media feed of Five O for months, I mean it. I am grateful to have a fiancé who can withstand me shoving pictures of donuts in his face multiple times a day until we finally got around to visiting the shop in Tampa, FL prior to heading to a Yankees vs Rays game. The whole adventure was a bit of blur because we were in a rush to catch the first pitch, but what I can remember of the donuts was everything I could have hoped for. They did not let my social media stalking self down.
We were only a able to try a few of their flavors since they had so many options available, but the ones we tried were incredible! The Cookie Monster is one I am particularly fond of as a self proclaimed Cookie Monster myself. It’s covered with a sweet, blue buttercream icing, drizzled with cookie butter, and layered with cookie dough bites and Oreo crumbles. Any self proclaimed cookie lover would go cross eyed for this beauty. The only filled donut we tried that day was their Dunkaroos donut which was a wonderful burst of sugar and nostalgia all in one.
Side note: Anyone on Team Big Bites out there? Nick Dompierre’s Cheat Day videos first introduced me to this shop! (peep the all mighty cronut in the featured photo above)
I hope for you fellow Floridians or people hoping to take their next vacation to Florida can use this list to make more educated donut eating decisions. I mean, priorities amiright?
