A while back I made a post on our Instagram featuring one of the desserts my Grandma has always made for me and my family on holidays and family gatherings. The dessert is called “Crustrounds” which is an apt title for these delicious bite sized treats. Crustrounds are crunchy, sweet pinwheel cookies made from the scraps of crust leftover from baking an apple pie. The recipe was something I have always held dear to my heart and on a weekend where I had plans to head south to visit my grandparents and rest of my family, I decided to try my luck at the recipe!
To my surprise, I could not find the recipe anywhere. My Grandma had always told me that the recipe had been passed down from past generations, but I figured there had to be some sort of similar recipe out there. After searching and searching online from Pinterest to Google to Instagram I was stumped. I needed to dig into the inner machanations of my mind (shout out to Patrick Starr) to try to remember what the recipe was. I realize I could have just asked my Grandma for the recipe, but I was really set on surprising her when I visited. After a bit of time and a lot of thinking I remembered enough to make a pretty comparable version of the dessert my Grandma has perfected. I had somehow thrown together Crustrounds that I was proud to share with my family.
Needless to say, my Grandma was thrilled that I had recreated the recipe that was the center point of so many amazing memories. Plus, the rest of my family was happy to have these around and didn’t even let them last the entire day! They were devoured!
After receiving the stamp of approval from my Grandma and family, I knew I had to share a photo of these delicious cinnamon swirled cookies with the @tobakeriesandbeyond fam. To my surprise, the comment section was quickly flooded with comments about how other people had grown up enjoying these little treats. So many people were sharing their own stories attached to the cookies, providing the names their Grandma’s had used like “diggys,” “Shneckenhaus” (snail house in German), and “puddletowns.”
In hopes of helping more people get the chance to enjoy a treat from their childhood, I am happy to provide the recipe for my Grandma’s Crustrounds!
